BONSAI IN INDIA

In India Bonsai activity started in the early forties, though there is no definite record to prove it. The pioneers of this art in Delhi are Dr. Hussain Tayebbhoy, Mr. Agnihotri and Dr(Mrs) Leila Dhanda.

Dr. Zakir Hussain, the president of India, started a Bonsai section in the President House under the supervision of Mr. S.K. Mathur.

Dr. Leila Dhanda along with Dr. Hussain Tayebbhoy started the Indian Bonsai Association and set the Bonsai culture in India on a firm footing. Dr. Leila Dhanda was actively involved in teaching and guiding the Bonsai enthusiasts. Around the same time the Art of Bonsai became very popular in Bombay, Calcutta and many other cities.
